I was speaking at a Rural Banking Manager’s conference.

It was going smoothly. It was too easy to compare sporting analogies with business: team work, high performing teams, coaches, players, game plan. They all compare and the list goes on.

I was getting into my stride when a heckler (aka Senior Executive) interrupted my well rehearsed monologue.

“That’s all well and good, Bill, but sporting teams practice all week to play anywhere from 60 to 120 minutes. We don’t have that luxury! We are all work with very little time to practice. How do you propose we do that?”

He had a point, for which I had no well thought out response.

There was an awkward pause. And it stretched for longer than I liked.

The audience of 60 or 70 stared at me to see how I’d respond. I looked down at my feet. (Because my feet had an answer for everything.)

Then, not an answer, but a question to the group:

“Would you like more practice time?”

A room full of nods.

“How do you propose to make that happen?”
